Since the nineteen-eighties Valencia Port has been a pioneer in telematic projects. Right from the start it was a promoter of EDI technology and of the use of telematics for optimisation of freight processing. This was how they got under way EDI messages for Cargo Manifestos and Customs Declarations. After these projects there were others such as dangerous goods and managing ship traffic.
All these projects focussed on improving documentary procedures between authorities and private companies.
It was at that time when the need to go a step further arose in Valencia’s port sector, to create the systems required to facilitate the required information exchange between the different logistics agents for proper operations at the Port of Valencia.
At Valencia Port Authority they implemented the preliminary studies for several projects, but it was nevertheless seen to be necessary for the Port Community as a whole to take the initiative in this set of projects.
Through the appropriate forums, Valencia Port Authority decided to set up a system which could cover all the documentary flows arising between the members of the Port Community in export, import and transhipment cycles. This system is known by the name of Community Information System (S.I.C in Spanish). The Port Community defined the system and validated each stage in its development.
After establishing the idea of the need for the S.I.C., it became necessary to have an instrument to construct this, and to carry out its maintenance and later exploitation. It was then that the decision to create INFOPORT VALENCIA was made.
INFOPORT was created in 1998 by Valencia Port Community, to act as a tool in the electronic information exchanges on logistics, through the Port of Valencia, and to facilitate the use of new information technologies.
These were the initial objectives of INFOPORT, but after attaining them the strategy was redirected to concentrate on offering technology services to the companies forming part of the port community. Today Infoport is consequently considered as being the technology company of the port community.
